SCHOOL FOR 5-YEAR-OLDS
o —- Re-admission in February. I ' SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS UNLIKELY. Press Association — courright. Wellington, January 23. “In accordance with the policy already announced by the Prime Minister preparations are being made for admitting five-year-olds when the schools open in February,” stated the Hon. Peter Fraser to-day. “In a few cases owing to the shifting of the population school accommodation may be inadequate, but as these cases will occur mainly in the largest towns it will probably be found possible to make suitable provision, either by hiring halls pending the erection ol additional building or by adjusting the boundaries of the school districts. “If in any 7 district it is not found possible to admit all five-year-olds who apply the youngest will be excluded and admitted from time to time according to age as circumstances permit. “It is not anticipated there will be a serious shortage of teachers during at least the first half of the year. In view of possible sudden changes in the rolls it has been decided that the grades of schools shall be determined for 1936 on the basis of 95 per cent, of the roll on March 31 in all cases where the grade so determined is higher than it would be if fixed in accordance with the present regulations. Attendance, of course, remains optional under seven year£ of age.” • " 7 r t -
