STRATFORD’S EFFORT

JUBILEE CELEBRATION BANQUET ARRANGED FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN WEEK OE ACTIVITIES Commencing on Saturday, May 4, and extending until Sunday, May 12, a series of events have been arranged in Stratford to fittingly celebrate the Silver Jubilie of the. reign of His Majesty the King. Among the varied events are special foottball matches, a Jubilee ball, a school children’s banquet and special thanksgiving services.

Broadway will be illuminated all next week by strings of coloured lights, and so that the best effect may be obtained on the outstanding occasion application has been made to the Postmaster-General to illuminate the post office in a similar manner. Many shopkeepers have notified their intention of collaborating with the celebrations by special window displays suitable to the occasion. A special Jubilee football match will be played on Saturday, May i, when the senior fifteens of the two local clubs —Stratford and United Old Boys—will play a noncompetition match. . Monday, May 6, is to be regarded as a general holiday by Government and Council employees, and the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, has requested all local employers to give their employees a holiday also. In the afternoon the occasion will be marked by a senior competition football match, United Old Boys v. Okaiawa, the playing of which was changed from Saturday to Monday by the Taranaki Rugby Union. The evening will be marked by a Jubilee ball in the Town Hall.

The significance and importance of the occasion will be impressed on the

children on Friday, May 10, when it has been decided to hold a banquet

for them

As between 800 and 900 children have to be catered for, including pupils of the Technical High School, primary school and Convent school, the task will be no light one. Trestle tables are to be erected in MessrsKleemau and Bishop’s garage, where the “banquet” will be served, and the proceedings will be introduced by an address by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan.

The estimated cost to the authorities per child is about lOd. Of this the Education Department grant provides 4d per child and the remainder will be made up by a subsidy by tbo Borough Council’ and perhaps the County Council. The borough grant will probably be £25. Arrangements for the function are in the hands of Messrs. A. H. R. Amess and L. J. Furrie.

Special thanksgiving church services on Sunday, May 12, will concludo the week’s activities. It was proposed to hold a combined church gathering in the Town Hall, but this was considered too unwieldy and the services will be held in the individual churches

Regarding the observance of Monday. May 6, as a holiday, the Prime Minister’s letter to His Worship the Mayor included the following paragraph: “Monday, May 6, is to be a paid holiday for all Government employees, including casual labour, and those working under awards. The adoption by your Council of a similar policy would be very helpful, and it is requested that you will please invite all employers in your area to show a similar consideration for their workpeople so far as circumstances permit. This day will also bo observed as a holiday in all public schools.” In our advertising columns His Worship the Mayor asks that the wishes of the Government be given effect to.
