Hicks drew with Kelling, Rett opening. In a good fighting game Hicks gave up a bishop for three pawns and eventually had a perpetual check on Kelling. A draw was agreed to on the 55th. move. Scott drew with Severne, Ruy Lopez opening. Severne defended with the Murphy defence, which led to a blocked game. In attempting to break through Scott lost a bishop but later Severne neglected a move and Scott regained his piece. Verv close play ended in a draw on move 65. ~ :i i Iflll ' Round VI. Smith lost to Hicks. Smith played the Ruy Lopez opening and after an even game exchanged a bishop for a knight. On the 19th. move in defending a pawn Smith made an oversight which led to the loss of the game and he resigned on the 21st. move. Kelling beat Scott. Scott played the Sicilian defence. He played very well at first and if Kelling had shown any carelessness would have won. Scott resigned at move 35. Didsbury lost to Dunlop. French defence with exchange variation. Didsbury obtained a good development at first but Dunlop’s skilful manipulation of his pawns and attack on the king’s side broke up an attack and Didsbury resigned on the 41st. move. Severne beat Pihl, four knights defence. Pihl played the Rubenstein defence (K to Q 5 on the fourth move). Severne soon obtained a stronger position. Later there was a general exchange of pieces and Severne won on the 46th. move. Watt beat Gyles, Ruy Lopez opening. Gyles defended on ordinary lines. Then he obtained a right superiority. Gyles through an oversight lost a bishop. Watt played the end game well and forced Gyles’ resignation on the 49th. move. Jones beat Le Petit, queen’s gambit declined. At first Le Petit had the better of the game, but Jones after exchanges was a pawn up and later won another pawn. Jones played carefully and won on the 56th. move.
