PLUNKET SHIELD

Canterbury-W ellington Match SOME GOOD PLAY Press Association—Copyright. Wellington. Jan. 1. Some good play was seen in the Plunket Shield cricket match between Canterbury and Wellington, which was commenced at the Basin Reserve on Saturday and was continued to-day. The Wellington batsmen gave a far better showing than that given against Auckland the previous week and made 328 in their first innings. The bowling, however, was not considered to be as good as that of the northerners, the only Canterbury man to cause any appreciable worry being Cromb. Tindill, who topped the Wellington score with 106, gave a particularly sound exhibition. The visitors opened their first innings in the afternoon and at the end of the first day’s play they had 77 for two wickets, Kerr being unbeaten with 43. This they carried to 424 to-day, notable performances being given by Kerr, Riley and Hadlee. The first-named played a sterling knock for 174 and was very warmly applauded when it terminated. He gave one chance in the first over of the second day’s play when he lifted Parsloe around to square leg, presenting Hatch, the Country representative, with the easiest of catches, which was dropped. That proved an expensive letoff and meant probably the difference between success and failure in the first innings.

Wellington made a drastic start when it opened the second innings late this afternoon. The opening batsman, Dustin, was bowled after scoring a single, and O’Brien, the other Country representative, was bowled without opening his account, two wickets being down for one run. To compensate for the bad start, however, Tindill and Ell, who followed O’Brien, played delightful cricket, Ell in particular executing some beautiful forceful shots to square leg and through slips. He scored 50 in 53 minutes before he was caught through being too bold with off stuff. The partnership had -arris d the score to 94—runs which were badly needed. Lamason joined Tindill, and at the end of the second day’s play they were both not out with 2 and 47 respectively, the total being 104 for three wickets.

A sorry feature of to-day’s play was the fielding weakness of Wellington. The scores are:— WELLINGTON. First Innings. Dustin, b Riley 45 Tindill, st. AUCKLAND v. OTAGO Press Association —Copyright. Auckland, Jan, 1. After two days’ play in the Plunket Shield „ match between Auckland and Otago Auckland is in a strong position. In the first innings Auckland scored 263 runs and Otago replied with 213. Batting again Auckland lost two wickets for 135 runs.

The batting throughout has been dis- . appointing, the Auckland players being' content to dig themselves in and lose 1 many scoring opportunities. The early Otago batsmen gave a boreing display but later in the innings the team was forced into defensive tactics. The scores are:— AUCKLAND. First Innings. J. E. Mills, b Dunning 20 P. E.
