SHIPPING AND PACKING OF APPLES

VALUABLE EXPERIMENT New ZealandTnd Australia Vitally Interested DISCOVERING BEST METHODS i Press Association. —Copyright. Reed. Today, 9.40 a.m. London, Sept. 15. Experiments of vital interest to Australia and New Zealand have begun at the Government Research Laboratory at Detton in packing apples. A model hold with a capacity of sixteen thousand cubic feet, contains seven thousand cases of English apples under conditions exactly akin to a voyage from Australia. Australian boxes are being used because of the absence of the bulge which is thought to be a factor affecting the air distribution. The hold will be kept at an even temperature and the thermometer will automatically register externally the heat generated by the fruit poisoning the air with carbon dioxide, including the development of moulds and bacteria. It is hoped that from this experiment the best corrective methods will be discovered.
