Some of England’s famous beauty spots have been devastated. Seventy Air Force men helped to fight a fire at Epping Forest. Soldiers wearing gas masks and steel helmets fought a vast heath fire on the Surrey commons which invaded the greens and fairways of the Sunningdale golf course.
