The cold was so intense that in i grasping iron the men left the skin of their hands on if. The association decided to press for an exemption from the sales tax on gold won by all those on 1 the Unemployment Board's subsidy ] scheme. j It was stated that they were working poor ground and keenly resented losing I 12s 6d on every ounce. One member j stated that the men received £3 17s 6d I an ounce for the first payment and sub- «' sequently a little over £5. It was quite evident that they were paying exchange as well as tax.
