FAR EASTERN HOSTILITIES

JAPANESE OFFENSIVE Press Association. —Copyright. Shanghai, May 9. The commencement of a Japanese offensive in order to drive the Chinese far from the Manchukuo border is confirmed. The Japanese are heavily bombarding Kupeikow Pass and east of the Luan Ho. Later Chinese reports state the Japanese are forging ahead in their latest offensive. Following withdrawal of the Chinese the Japanese reached Changli last night, their armoured train later reaching Houfengtai, where it was unable to proceed owing to the destruction of a railway bridge. Large bodies of Chinese troops are concentrating on the west bank of the Luan River, though evacuating Lulung and Funing, where the Japanese repeatedly bombed, inflicting severe casualties.
