PEPPER THROWN IN EYES
Daring Assault on Storekeeper BURGLAR IN A TAXI Man Arrested Later Press Association. —Copyright, Palmerston N„ May 9. A daring assault and theft were attempted this morning when a youth threw pepper in the eyes of a storekeeper and decamped with about £5. The perpetrator operated in daylight, even chartering a taxi to assist him in his enterprise. He was recognised by a citizen during a chase through the streets, however, and was subsequently apprehended. The incident occurred in the grocery store of William Wiseman. The young man entered the shop and ordered a tin of cocoa and a carton of honey. The goods were placed on the counter. The youth said he wanted change for a £5 note. Mr. Wiseman brought the change, which he placed on the counter. The youth put his hand in his pocket, as Mr. Wiseman thought, for a note, but he pulled out a quantity of. pepper which he threw in Mr. Wiseman’s eyes. He grabbed the money and made for the street, where the taxi was waiting. Fortunately Mr. Wiseman was wearing spectacles. He chased the youth, who quitted the waiting taxi and eluded pursuit, but not before he had been recognised by a pedestrian. The police subsequently effected an arrest. Mr. Wiseman recovered from the pepper this afternoon.
