Mayor's Committee Formed

MONEY-RAISING ACTIVITIES

Measures for relieving distress in Stratford and plans for raising the necessary funds were made at a general meeting of Stratford men last evening. The original meeting was held last Friday, when two committees were set up and an emergency fund established—-an appeal for 500 halfcrowns.

The Mayor-elect, Mr. J. W. McMillan, presided and in expressing the opinion that more enthusiasm should ho shown in endeavours to relieve distress, said that more of the spirit shown during the war would be helpful He explained that at the first meeting a fund had been opened under the name of the Mayor’s Relief Fund. Formally he had not become Mayor, said Mr. McMillan, but as soon *8 he did he would issue a public appeal. It was revived that the organisation be termed the Mayor’s Relief Committee. The Mayor, Deputy-Mayor and Mr. N.'H. Moss were appointed trustees of the fund, and Mr. Wm. Power was ap r> oint°d auditor. The appointment of Mr. S. Hayton as secretary was confirmed. A letter from Mr. Bert Vinson offered free the services of the Ambassadors’ Dance Band for a charity ball 5n the Town Hall. The writer also advanced several suggestions which hr considered would be lucrative.

Reporting on the activities of the jjfO tem entertainment committee Mr. T. Boyle said that the committee intended to stage a community sing in the Parish Hall on Monday night. A voluntary collection would be taken. Later, a dance would be held in tlu same hall, which had been offered fo* use free of charge. The committee had jalso approached the manager of tlu King’s Theatre, Stratford, who hac. offered free the use of the theatre foi a Sunday night concert. Miss E. Moon and Miss T. Mcßae had promisee support for a play. A general committee was appointee *as follows; Messrs. N, H. Moss (chair map) R. H. White, J. C. McDowall, S. Hayton, T. W. Smith, W. D. Young. C. Campbell, H. Gaze, Bert Vmscn, W. Harris, R. F. Harkness, B. J. C Joyes, H. Summerfield, R. Watson, R. Hook, H. E. Lawrence, D. E. White, T. Boyle, F. Clarke, R. A. Vincent. An ' executive comprising the trustees and Mr. D. E. White was elected. The meeting generally favoured a ball on a large scale and it was resolved that arrangements be set in train for the function to be held tentatively on Thursday, June 15. On the suggestion of Mr. W. Harris, it was decided to endeavour to stage a farcical football match on a Thursday afternoon. Messrs. R. F Harkness and Duncan Young were deputed to investigate the possibilities of an event of that nature. It was resolved that two business men be appointed to canvas Broadway for contributions to the halfcrown appeal. Overlapping would thin be eliminated.

At a subsequent meeting of the gen era! committee Mr. C. Campbell county clerk, was appointed treasurer of the fund.
