HEAVY WEATHER

Encountered hy Airmen FORCED LANDING Press Association.-— Copyright. Dannevirke, April 23.—About five p.m. yesterday in good weather Fly-ing-Officer J. Buckeridge and Mr. H. Preston, ground engineer of the Wai-rarapa-RUahine Aero Club, left Aid tio for Dannevirke, the former flying a privately-owned machine and the latter a Wairarapa Club plane. The journey to Dannevirke usually occupies 20 minutes. En route they encountered heavy westerly winds and rain squalls. Darkness came quickly and the planes were separated. When over Waitahora valley, a few miles from Dannevirke, Mr. Preston decided to land in the first available paddock. In landing the machine touched the ground while still in a partial side slip. The undercarriage was carried away and the centre section fittings and one wing were damaged. The pilot was unhurt. The machine was dismantled and shipped by lorry to Masterton to-day. Flight-Lieutenant Buckeridge arrived safely at Dannevirke, landing in the dark at the local aerodrome.
