NO POWER TO INTERFERE

Dairy Board and Marketing

MR. HINE EXPLAINS POSITION

The opinion of Mr. James Hine, Waitara, was sought yesterday on the criticism of the Dairy Produce Board expressed at a meeting of farmers at Okato on Friday night and, particularly tn Mr. S. Hawke's allegation that certain firms were offering large quantities of New Zealand dairy pi-oduce on the London market at prices below the present level, thus forcing prices down. Mr. Hine is a member of the Dairy Produce Board.

As in response to a request from the farmers' committee he would be meeting the producers at Okato at an early date, he felt disinclined to comment on the report of the recent meeting, Mr. Hine said. He would point out, however, that under the present conditions of limited control the Dairy Board had no power whatever to interfere with marketing, but the chairman (Mr. W. J. lorns) was now in London gathering all possible imformation regarding allegations of forward selling. Mr. Hine will attend a meeting of the board at Wellington on Friday, when the delegates to Australia will have returned.
