Residences Threatened

Press Association. —Copypaht

Gisborne, April 22.—A spectacular fire which occurred in a plantation Of heavy timber on the hills above the town yesterday afternoon at one stage threatened two large residences, and for a time caused anxiety as to the safety of the Lister private hospital at the foot of the hill. Flames had been spreading some time before an alarm was given from the hospital, and immediately the brigade turned out. The outbreak was beyond the borough boundary, and volunteer fire-fighters had been active for some time before the brigade arrived. With the assistance of brigadesmen the flames were soon subdued. The fire had reached within a dozen feet of a two-storied house occupied by Mr. A. CurrJc, and was spreading uphill towards Mr. J. Barns-Graham's residence.
