I Entering the Carlton branch of the I English, Scottish and Australian Bank I just before mid-day on Saturday, a man threw pepper in the eyes of a teller nam- ! ed Frewin and seized a pile of notes. > The ledger keeper, named Hayes, noted the action of the robber and drew his pistol and shot the robber in the chest. The robber fell back and the notes he had taken were scattered. He rushed to the door where Mrs. O'Halloran, who had heard the shot, attempted to stop him. He punched her and made off, but collapsed in a nearby lane. He was taken to hospital and died in a few minutes, having refused to give his namo. The teller's eyes were badly injured. The notes were recovered but the robber is still unidentified.
A party of gunmen hidden in an arcade in Gray Street, St. Kilda, fired a fusillade as Herbert Adams, formerly a bookmaker, stepped out of an adjoinmg shop on Saturday evening. One shot struck Adams in the leg. He was taken to hospital.
The assailants escaped for the spot is a busy one. Two newsboys in the line of fire had a lucky escape.
