PRISONERS ESCAPE
Bolt from Prison Camp EXPLOIT CARFFULLY PLANNED One Man Recaptured Auckland, April 23.—Three prisoners escaped from the W'aik"ne sub-nrison camp 16 miles south of Turangi on Fridav morning. The escapees are Eugene Charles Dominic McCarthy. aged 25, who is serving a sentence of three years. Basil Hodgson, aged 26. serving a sentence of two years, and Vincent Barney Reardon, aged 30, serving a sentence of two years.
The three men reported sick and with a warder in charge of them were the only occupants of the camn on Vriday morning. The escape had apparently been carefully planned. Hodgson and Reardon were occupying the same dormitory. They smashed open the locked door with a camp stool and were joined in the open by McCarthy, who escaped from his cell by climbing through the window. Three men armed themselves with sticks and attempted to stop them. The men then headed down the disused National Park-Taupo road. An intensive search was organised and it was reported late this afternoon that one prisoner whose name was not available was recaptured at Hihitahi, between Waiouru and Taihape.
