STRATFORD MAIN TRUNK

Clearing the Line &

GOODS SERVICE ON MAX S

As far as can be estimated at present, and providing the weather does not interfere unduly with the work of clearing the slip at the Okahukura tunnel on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway, the line will be ready for the resumption of the goods service by May 8. Two huge slips brought down during the heavy rains of a few weeks ago blocked each end of the tunnel. The slip on the Ohura side of the tunnel has been cleared and the rails, which were torn up, have been relaid up to the tunnel. A 'ayer of silt about two feet deep was deposited through the tunnel; ten chains of the tunnel at the Ohura end has been cleared. At the Okahukura end the debris has been removed, to within a chain of the entrance of the tunnel. At the Ohura end day and night shifts are being worked by large gangs of men. The workers have not yet reached an object which demonstrates the forces let loose in the district on the day of the storm. Washed in from the Ohura entrance for 40 chains, more than half the length, there lies in the tunnel a log a chain log and 2 feet in diameter, providing an obstruction 10ft wide. Once the men reach it, however, the log is not expected to give much trouble.

So far no accurate estimation of the date on which the passenger service will be commenced is available.
