SHEEP DOG TRIALS

Wharehuia Club 7

The second annual trials of the Wharehuia Sheep Dog Trial Club were held in fine weather and under generally auspicious conditions on Mr. W. E. Forbes' property at Kupe yesterday afternoon. About 60 residents of Wharehuia, Te Popo and Kupe districts assembled to watch the events.

Three events were run—the head and ring, the head and yard, and the huntaway. Each attracted good entries and was productive of keen competition. The trials are run with the intention of stimulating interest in the sport among farmers of the district and not with the idea of promoting trials suitable for outside competition. All the entries were local, and the dogs were the ordinary dog's of the farms. Under such circumstances, interest was well maintained, spectators cheering each other's successes and making light of the rather numerous mistakes.

Officials at the trials were: President of the club, Mr. W. E. Forbes; secretary, Mr. Reg. Wellington; shpep steward. Mr. T. L. Gibbs; iudge, Mr. H. Lambert (Tarata). Messrs. W. Jackson and N. Corkill and helpers attended to the placing of flags, markers and hurdles. The sheep were supplied by Mr. N. Corkill. Results are: Head and Ring.—Head 17. pull 17, rinp 4, command 12; total 50.
