Tourney at Waitara
STRATFORD RUNNERS-UP
The Stratford men's team competing yesterday at the hockey tournament at Waitara were narrowly defeated in the final by Alhambra, who won, after extra time had been played by two goals and a hit behind to two goals. Eight teams took part in the tournament, the Stratford team being as follows: Sharroclc, Kendrick, Cutfield. Adams, Currie, Gaze, Cook, Jury, Irwin, Vincent, Claridge. The. winners received a silver cup .presented by Mr. M. Fahy for annual competition. In the first round Stratford played New Plymouth territorials, the game ending with no score on either side. In the second round Stratford defeated Emergencies by 10. goals to one, and in the third round defeated Waitara by one goal to nil, to. emerge as the B 'section winers. Alhambra were the winners of the A section and the play-off provided some interesting play. Alhambra drew first blood but Irwin equalised shortly afterwards for Stratford. In the second half, Lewis shot one in for Alhambra and within seconds of time Irwin netted in splendid style for Stratford. Extra time was played, with no further score, and. the match continuing, Alhambra were fortunate enough to hit behind and win the game. The referees during the tournament were Messrs. J. R. Bennett, L. Byron, Foster and Ebbett.
