SELF-HELP CLUB

Meeting of Executive SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY A meeting of the executive of the Stratford Self-Help Club was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. H. C. Johnson chairman), W. L. Kennedy, M. Priest (gardening officer), Rev. J. McGregor, Dr. Doris Gordon and the secretary (Mrs B. Black.) Reporting on the operations of the club, Mrs Black said that since her last report the club had benefited as the result of the shop day held on March 28, when £4 1,3 s fid was made on the doll and pram, £1 2s fid on the barrow and £4 5s Gd on the sale of vegetables and produce—a total of £lO Is fid for the day. it was pleasing to note that although several donations were from non-members the bulk of the produce was received from club members’ gardens, and was substantial evidence of the appreciation of members of the work done by the club. Several of the men assisted at the shop with the raffle. Following an appeal for additional books for the library about 100 were presented or promised. The club was eager to get all the books it could ,as the number of L )oks borrowed increased every week, and would continue to do so as the white" weather approached. The gardening officer reported that the vegetables donated by several members of the club to the shop day were a credit to the growers. At the same time the donations were not as large as they should have been considering the assistance given by the club. Thanks were due to some of the members who willingly assisted the shop day, and to Mr. T. Allen for the use of his conveyance to bring in the vegetables. In the seed beds were 3000 Enfield Market cabbage plants ready for planting out. A large number of young onions were making good progress. Unfortunately there was the possibility that the seed-beds would be lost owing to a change of tenant of the ground. Some glass was required for assisting to raise early plants. Owing to the fly, cabbages were not plentiful, but members appeared to have sufficient other vegetables to carry them through the winter. The reports were received.

A statement of .accounts showed that the club has a credit balance of £lO fis sd.

On the motion of Dr. Gordon it was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr. J. S. Lyons for the use of premises for the shop day.

Mrs. Black reported that in; response to the appeal for books 100 hud been received or promised, and that more were arriving every day. The Stratford Poultry and Winter Show Association executive wrote asking the club for suggestions in regard to staging a display of vegetables from-the gardens of club members at the forthcoming show. No entry fees would be charged. The matter was referred to the chairman and Mr. Priest.
