FISH AND GAME

Acclimatisation Society Council TROUT IN FINE CONDITION The Council of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society held its monthly meeting last night, those present being: Messrs. A. E. Hunter (chairman), E. P. Pridham, J. Petrie, E. H. Eason, E. H. Kivell, A. Eichstaedt, C. Atkinson, A. J. Davey, T. Richardson, E. Worthington and I. Jones (curator). Mr. Eichstaedt, as one of the visiting committee, said the fish in the ponds at the hatchery were in fine condition, especially the rainbow. During the month 1115 fish were liberated. According to an English authority, he said, it was harmful to keep young fish too long and on meat. The curator . said it was becoming difficult to get suitable food for the fish,

la reply to Mr. Pridham, the chairman said that sluicing was still being done at the Ratapiko Lake and Mr. Pridham suggested that the rainbow destined for liberation in the

lake should be held lor a month till sluicing operations were ceased and the water cleared.

The chairman pointed out that the sluicing work might take longer than a month. Mr. Pridham contended that it would be tolly to liberate the fish in the lake until the water cleared. If the brown trout were liberated in the streams there would then be sufficient food for the rainbow. It was decided to hold the rainbow in the ponds until sluicing operations, were completed. Arrangements were made to liberate the balance of iSO.OOO brown yearling trout throughout streams in the district.

Messrs. Pridham and Worthington were appointed visiting committee for May.
