SWIMMING BATHS

To the Editor.)

Sir, —W, I oi■ undersigned, would like in ciuTin i :i statement made by Mr. A, !I. Amess which appeared i'i , ..ur mpurt of the council meeting ins- m eniiig. In mooting the proposal i *) hniid baths at the school Mr. i;i tire course of his remarks, m< :v: ; d that the Swimming Club v are in favour of the proposal. This is fu! from being the case, as the MV!mining Club are only waiting until Ibe new council takes oflice to place before them proposals for the erection of municipal baths. The proposed baths at the school would be of no value to the Swimming Club for three reasons: (a) They are not central. (b) The proposed width of 30 feet which is just a trifle wider than the present primary school baths is not sufficient for club purposes. (c) The baths would require extensive appointments, dressing and seating accommodation, as well as lighting to be of use to the club. The need for municipal baths in Stratford is making itself apparent and what the Swimming Club wish to see is a covered tepid bath. Stratford claims to be a progressive town. If so. let Stratford lead the way by building the first tepid baths in Taranaki. Such a bath would prove popular with the public and would be a source of revenue to the council. The club is prepared to place before lhe council proposals for financing the cost of the baths. It is obvious that even a town as progressive as Stratford cannot afford to maintain three baths and while we realise the value of baths at the High School we think that a greater need would be served by the erection of public baths in a central position.—W.e are, etc., for the Stratford Swimming Club. V. J. HENDERSON, President. R. TRUEMAN, Hon. Secretary.
