COLD SPELL IN BRITAIN

ARCTIC BLIZZARD SWEEPS COUNTRY London, Feb. 20.—An Arctic blizzard swept England, Scotland and Wales today, making many highroads almost unusable owing to frozen ice. Elsewhere motor-cars were trapped in snowdrifts. Police stations and garages were inundated with telephone messages from distressed motorists, many of whom were marooned all night on the moorland roads in Northern England. The Canadian Pacific liner Montrose grounded on a dangerous sandbank in the Mersey, her 180 passengers being transhipped to safety despite the rough weather. The vessel was later refloated.
