RAILWAY REVENUE

FALL IN JUNE r - EFFECT OF COAL STRIKE The Railway Department’s revenue for June suffered a setback as a result of the recent stoppage at the coal mines in the North, according to a statement by the General Man. ager of Railways, Mr. P. G. Roussell, yesterday. Commenting on the figures relating to the railways revenue for the four weeks ended Juno 25, Mr. Reussell said that the total receipts amounted to £408,933, a decline of £84,359 when compared with the revenue fig-, ures for the . corresponding period last year 1 . The main contributing factor to this decrease was the strike in the various coal mines throughout the Dominion. “As an offset to this substantial drop in revenue,” said Mr. Roussell, “the working expenses also showed a heavy decline, the total expenditure being £397,871, as compared with £460,770 for the same frur-weekly period of 1931, a decrease of £62,899. “The loss of revenue resulting from the trouble in the coal mining industry is, of course, also reflected in the figures for the three periods cf the current financial year to date, coni: pared with tlie same periods of 1931. The total revenue for these three four.weekly periods fell from £1,564,396 to £1,416,511, a decrease of £147,885. The total working expenses for the same three four, weekly periods were reduced from £1,352.654 to £1,224,146, a reduction of £128,508.”
