Stratford Horticultural Society The balance-sheet for the Spring Show of the Stratford Horticultural Society was submitted to a meeting of the committee, disclosing a very satisfactory position. A profit of over £lO was made on the show. Votes of thanks were passed to the Judges and to all who had assisted In making the show such a success. It was decided to hold the Summer Show on the first Saturday in March, and subcommittees were appointed ' to revise the schedule and report to a future meeting. In view of the expressions of appreciation of the committee’s arrangements in providing vases for the display of the exhibits, it was decided to acquire another 100 before the Summer Show was held. Gold Standard and Poker The opinion that the gold standard would certainly go by the hoard if France and America continued to keep their gold “tied up” was expressed by an American business man who passed through Auckland on the Niagara. “If four men are playing poker and two dt the players win all the chips, the other two stop playing, and that’s exactly what England and other countries of the world will do if France and Ame-t rica continued to hold all their gold.” he said. Gold was only worth something as long as it was recognised by outside countries, and if the nation’s holding it continued to keep their bands on it the standard would be abandoned and a new' variety of “chips” would be introduced. ■ •' .
