A BETTER DEMAND

CHANCE TO CAPTURE MARKETS TIME FOR PROPAGANDA In response to the Government's urgent appeal, London stores report that there is a marked increase in the demand for British Dominion products, particularly foodstuffs. All the indications are that the time is most opportune for a big trade push there. The people are increasingly realising the importance of reducing foreign payments and housewives everywhere are asking before making a purchase whether tnc <joods are British, Australian or New Zealand. There was never a greater opportunity for strengthening the hold on the British markets, and any propaganda efforts now are likely to be well repaid. The newspapers give prominence to the New Zealand Dairy Board's attempt to increase food supplies without higher prices, especially mentioning the picturesque phrase about the sailing of the "Empire Butter Fleet" of 35 ships from New Zealand b.y the end of November. The new Government, is sure to look to the Dominions to supply the deficiency in foodstuffs caused by the exclusion or • limitation of foreign product s. Thus, if as is generally supposed, an election is imminent, it will be a short, sharp contest followed immorliately by a tariff, checking imports. No Government, could expect to last if British larders were empty or the prices of. foodstuffs was allowed to soar. The Dominions therefore are most likely to be called on to make up the deficiency in products. There is plenty of shipping available, and attempts at profiteering would be sternly repressed. A message -from Dublin states that Mr. W. T. Cosgrave, President of the Executive Council, issued an appeal to the Free State to buy home or British products. lie also appeals to the people of Great Britain 'to buy Free State rather than foreign goods.
