STRATFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE Reporting to the Stratford School Committee at the monthly meeting last night, Mr. W. Hoskin (chairman) stated that a conference had been held between the Baths Committee and representatives of the Stratford Swimming Club. He said the arrangement between the two bodies had been that the club had to pay half its profits to the committee every season. This year, chiefly owing to the adverse weather, the club had made a profit of only £2. The deputation had offered the committee a flat rate of £5 a season. The club had cer tainly spent money upon improvements to the seating accommodation, but those additions were not necessary from the viewpoint of the school or the committee.' .

After discussion it was resolved,.on the motion of Messrs. P. Aitken and H. F. Vosseler, that the incoming committee be recommended to adopt the following motion: "That the offer of £5 per year be accepted at the pleasure of the school committee, with the proviso that the committee insists that a public risk insurance be taken and paid for by the club, the £5 per year to be treated as a hire for the use of the baths for carnivals, and' that club members pay for the usual season tickets, as in the past." :, The members, present at the meeting were: Messrs. W. Foekin, J. Morrison, H. F. Vosseler, A. B. Moss; A; Ferguson, P. T. Aitken and Mrs. S. Robinson. Visiting Committee The visiting committee reported that the school and grounds appeared to be quite clean and satisfactory. A yard of pit metal was required at the swings to fill some hollows. The report was received,' and it was decided to obtain the pit metal from the Borough Council. The committee for the month of April will be Mr. Vosseler and Mrs. Robinson. .*,, Ariel Street Work The chairman reported that the grounds committee had met in, con-, nection with the levelling of part of 7 Ariel Street, and recommended that the work be carried out. It was re : solved on the motion of Messrs. Ferguson and Aitken that application be made to the Borough Council for the requisite number of men to carry out the work under No. 5a scheme, and that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman. . ■■•• .

Mr. Ferguson moved and Mr. Morrison seconded that application b« made to the Education Board for the necessary material, wire, posts, etc, to fence the new work.

General

It was decided that the committee approve of the idea of appointing a dental clinic citizens' committee outside of the School Committee, to control the financial side of the clinic. The chairman reported having interviewed the town clerk, Mr. P. Skoglund, regarding the supply of plants for the grounds, and on the motion of Messrs. Ferguson and Vosseler it was resolved that no further action be taken.

The secretary, Mr. G. A. Carter, was thanked for his donation to the committee, by foregoing the usual remuneration in connection With the y picnic. \

Headmaster's Report : ' The average attendance for the four weeks had been 538, the average roll 575 and the average of the highest at-, tendances 548; an average attendance of 561 was needed for the next subgrade, reported Mr. L. J. Furrie. During the period 20 pupils were entered and 16 left. Included in the entries were 17 from Napier schools. Of this number 11 had returned to Napier. Miss Gasson, of Nelson Park School, Napier, had commenced d»tty at the school on March 1. Mis% D. Callaghan, who was previously relieving, relinquished duty on Miss Gassoh's arrival. The board's painting staff had commenced work on the building about a week ago. It was the architect's intention to have the inside corridor repainted during the vacation. The old shelter sheds at the west end of the ground were to be painted. The swimming sports on Wednesday had been as successful as in past years. The parents' cup for the girls' f championship was won by Rhoda Black for the second time. Maurice Fisher won the Tyrer memorial cup for the boys' championship. The athletic sports would be held on Victoria Park on Thursday. It had been usual for the school to send a team to the North Taranaki schools' championships at New Plymouth on March 20 each year, but owing to the many calls on parents and the general conditions, Mr. Furrie had decided not to compete this year. He regretted having to refrain from entering a team, but as it would mean 60 or 70 pupils would be asked to find, money to travel to New Plymouth, he felt it would be an added strain on many parental purses.

During the month Mr. C. H. Moore, the Education Board achi*«ct,* accompanied by Messrs. P. Kel!sr, resident engineer of the Public Works Department, and Seddon, supervisor of buildings, had made an inspection of the school buildings. Their report would no doubt be made public in due course. Parents need have no fears for the safety of their children In respect to earthquake risk while at school.
