MAULED BY BEAR

VISITOR WHO TRIED TO STROKE IT. When a visitor to Edgbaston Botanical Gardens, Birmingham, England, tried to stroke the Ik ad ot a bear which is among a small collection of animals at the gardens, the hear seized his right arm, inflicting serious injuries. The visitor, a young man named Wilfred It. Ward, of 32, Birch field Road, Birchfleld, was unaccompanied, and it was his shriek that attracted attention. On help arriving ho was lying in a narrow space between the bars of the cage and some outer protecting railings. Prompt steps were taken to release him. It was found that'the forearm was severely lacerated. First-aid was given, and Ward was taken to hospital, where blood transfusion was deemed necessary. The bear, which has been at the gardens for about three years, Is a-general favourite and has never before shown any dangerous tendencies.
