TASMAN YACHT RACE
BOATS LEAVE AUCKLAND RANG MAKES GOOD START PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS AUCKLAND, .March 15. The yacht race across the Tasman commenced yesterday afternoon in perfect weather. Conditions to-day are again ideal and the yachts should have a good start on the long journey. The Norwegian yacht Toddy crossed llie starting one at two o’clock, followed a minute or two later by the Oimara, and 40 minutes later by tfic Auckland boat. Rangi, which crossed the line after a hasty preparation, local officers of the Vaehi Sqju.L-m having refused to d( lay the e,i nf the race to enable the three yachts to c osf; the lino together. Large crowds assembled on the waterfront before the race, the competitors being given an enthusiastic farewell. Hundreds of yachts and launches followed the contestants down the harbour. 'The Rangi, in racing rig, had already knocked ton minutes off her late start by the time she reached North Head. At the reqnest ol Captains Pennell and Tambs the time of the late starter was recorded and an allowance will lie made at the finish of r.iic race. Rounded the Cape The light keeper at. Cape Brett reported to-night that the Oimara passed at eleven this morning. 'The Teddy and Rangi, separated by about a mile and a half, followed at three o’clock, this afternoon. The Teddy was <dose in shore and the others about four miles out. I lie weather was fine with a light wind from the south-east.
