MAURITIUS HURRICANE

VERY HEAVY DAMAGE WIDESPREAD DISTRESS CAUSED RUGBY, Marhc 9. A telegram from the Governor of Mauritius to the secretary for the Colonies, says that a preliminary inspection shows that the hurricane damage was "severe, causing widespread distress. A large number of small dwellings have been demolished and several thousands are homeless. The heaviest damage is reported in Moka and the western suburbs of Port Lewis. The Moka Hospital was badly damaged and will probably have to be evacuated. Temporary relief measures are in progress for the feeding and sheltering of the homeless. The loss of life, so far, is reported to be 12, but the reports are incomplete as roaas are blocked with debris. Damage to cane crops which were exceptionally promising, was very severe.
