The New Drainage Work

MUCH DONE IN PAST SIX MONTHS. COMPLETION IN SIGHT. Since the end of March work has been proceeding on the laying of new drainage mains in Stratford, and in about three months the work planned should bo completed. The whole of the work is estimated to cost £BOOO and so far the cost has been well within the estimate, Yesterday Mr. L. B. Davis, the Borough Foreman, took a "Post'' representative over the ground and explained what had been done. A manhole at the High School gate marks the commencement of the present job, and a 15inch runs north along Swansea RdThe pipe is larger than actually required for the volume of water to he dealt with, because the low grade causes a slow Raw. The average depth of the trench along Swansea Road was 9 feet. There is a man-hole at Fenton Street, up which a six-inch main runs for 21 chains. Altogether there are 30* chains of sewer in Swansea Road. Halfway between Fenton and Regan Streets there is a man-hole, in view of the possibility of a street being run eastward .A six-inch main runs 20 chains up Regan Street.

OVER PRIVATE LAND. A six-inch pipe runs down Sylvia Street, -and then through private property to Falstaff Street, also draining Rosalind Street. Opposite Sylvia Street a 9-inch pipe- branches off through private property to Antonio Street, runs along Antonio Street and thence goes through, private property to Ariel Street. The drain then runs along Seyton St. to Miranda, (Street}.. From Began Street to Antonia Street the trench was very deep, going down to 16ft 9in, the depth over seven chains avaging 16ft. Much water was met with on this section. The man-hole on the cornea'! of Antonio Street and Cordelia Street is thirteen feet deep. A six-inch main goes up Cordelia Street to the Racecourse. Nine-inch steel pipes are carried over a gully in; Atrieft Street tan three concrete piers. Mr. Davis explained that junctions had been provided for all vacant sections which the mains pass, and a record kept of the positions .so that in fifty years' time it would be quite easy to find them. The main goes up Seyton Street and passes four feet nncler the main in Broadway, A DEEP TRENCH.

West of Broadway the trench is at present being sunk and at Miranda Street the depth of 13 feet some water being met with* Over this section the old main will be discarded, as it is too high by seven feet. Brains have still to be laid in Portia Street, Hamlet Street and part of Pembroke Road to drain into this Seyton Street main. The Orlando Street main is continued along part of Pembroke Road, and big enough to deal with 200 houses, being provided in case the Extension should ever be settled. In the south end ofi the town a new main, has been laid in Celia Street from Juliet Street to Broadway the existing main being taken out, it bejng throe !teet Hjoo high. The main was laid in Broadway from Celia Street but work was stopped there, owing to the large amount of water met with. Work on this section will not be .resumed till about February, when it is hoped that the country will be drier. When part of Broadway, Hamlet Street and Rtonieo Street are done, this! will complete the work in the south. Pipes have been laid in Portia Bt., from Page Street to Opimiake Road, and. in Miranda Street, from Page Street to Romeo Street.,
