The referee gave his decision :.u the ninth round. Heeney absorbed considerable punishment through nine unexciting rounds. The New Zeahmder wok e up in the fourth and staggered Griffiths with two heavy blows to the chin. Tom was unable to follow up his advantage and after the fifth it was a question wbetlher he could last the remainder of the route. The referee helped him 10 the corner in the ninth round, in which his eye was severely cut and th e fight was stopped and awarded t 0 Griffiths.

Nelson said he had been ailing for a fortnight and was ’at the 1 time suffering se/ere pa. ns in the head. He said he would only have fallen down ill lo continued. Donovuti had a lead on points.
