“BRASS HATS”
REFERENCE DEPLORED. SPEAKER TAKEN TO TASK A sharp reply to a reference by the Hon. A. ,S. Malcolm to the defence system in New Zealand was made by tho Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, when speaking in the Address-iu-.Reply delate in the Legislative Council yesterday. The hon. gentleman spoke rather disparagingly of what he described aft the brass hats”, said Mr. Mclntyre. “I don’t think it is becoming for any member of this Council to speak to speak in derogatory fashion about officers of our force who when the war came showed that they were just as prepared as anyone elso to take their lives in then hands. Each and every man proved ho was a hero when tho occasion arose. “It cost us a lot off money to build up our force, and I hope the Government will not make the depression an excuse to abolish it altogether. It would ho foolish to scrap the whole of our defence system. We must have some form of defence”. Mr. Mclntyre said hq believed a Bdl on tho subject would be brought down shortly, and until that time lie would reserve any 'further comment he had to make.
