TOKO SETTLERS HOLD ANNUAL BALL.

WINTER FODDER COMPETITIONS. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. In' previous years the winter fodder competitions in the Toko district were conducted by the Settlers’ Association, which held an ai.'.iual ball, at which the prizes won were presented. Last year the Association handed the control of the com- : petitions to the Toko branch of the Farmers’ Union', which set up a special committee to attend to the matter. This committee arranged for the usual a nun a I ball, which was held last night. There was a large attendance, and Scott’s orchestra supplied music, for the dauc- . jng. The Monte Carlo waltz was 1 won by Mr K. Ewans and Miss M- : Hutchins. A splendid supper was I provided by the ladies of the district, j prior to presenting the trophies, ! the chairmen (Mr T. T. Murray) said the competitions had been going on for 20 years,* the fiist thiee being run by the old Farmers’ Union, then the Settlers’ Association carried on until last year, when th e Farmers ’Union as it is kuown to-day again took control. He mentioned that next year it was hoped to hold a competition for grass growing, in addition to the otheis. The recipients of prizes were:

MANGOLD GROWING. Best Half-acre. Mr J. r;eid 119 tons 4cwt to the acre, and a total of 256 points, 1 cud cup. Mt E. Jones, 711 tons, total of points, 2. Mr A. Marfell, 59 tons .total of 134 tons, 3. Mr Reids’ splendid crop also won the Sutton Challenge Cup for competition throughout North Taranaki. There was only on e entry in the best acre of ma*agolds competition for the Evan Jones cup, and this was also won by Mr J. Reid. A possible error was discovered in the marking of two competitions, and the weight of Mr -Reid’s crops may be found to he 140 tons for the half acre and 119 tons for the acre.

CARROT GROWING. Mr E. Jones, 51 teas, 119 points, 1 and cup. Mr J- R. Woolaston, 2Si tons, 72* points, 2. SWEDE GROWING. Mr L. Marfell, 58 tons 6cwt. f 133£ points, 1 and cup. Mr E. Jones, 57 tons 9c\vL, 131 points, 2. Mr H. Cook, 56 tons scwt., 129 points, 3. STACK ENSILAGE. Mr J. Jones, 90 pts., 1 and Masters’ cup. Mr G. Were, 91 1-4 points, '2. Mr T. A. Rowe, 91 points, 3. HAY STACKS. Mr J. Jones, 90 points, 1 and. cup. Mr H. J. Kaye, 88 points, 2. M r J. B. Hine, 87 points ,3. The challenge trophy for most points in all the competitions was |>aln won by Mr Evan Jones.
