July 4, The conference of the .Manufacturers ’ Federation to-day expressed itself in favour of a suggestion that, in order l<> make Anzae. Day one of true, significance to all sections of the community,. a, special fund should he cs,;, dished for the benefit of returned soldiers, or their opendants, on a system of voluntary contributions by those who received payment of wages, or salaries, for the day. A Dunedin remit proposed that, in the best economic interests of the Dominion, Anzm Day should be commemorated on the Sunday preceding April ! 25, It.was further suggested that, if public opinion demanded the retention, of the present legislation providing for the observance of Anzae Day on April 25, the Federation should advocate amended legislation to require all employers to pay into a. special fund, for the benefit of returned soldiers, or their dependants, the amount that would otherwise be paid as wages, or salaries, to the whole of their employees for that day. Colonel D. Colcjuohpun, a member of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ said that numerous conferences of that body had taken a strong view with regard to the observance of Anzae Day, being emphatic that the commemoration, should be on the anniversary of the landing. Ho appealed to the conference not. to attempt to interfere with the p-sent arrangement. After discussion it was decided to withdraw the remit and substitute the following:— “That this Federation intimates to the Returned,Soldiers’ Association that it, would support proposals whereby Anzae Day would bo made one of true significance to all sections of the community by endeavouring to establish a special fund, for the benefit of returned soldiers, or their dependants, on a system of voluntary contributions by those, who at present, receive payment of wages, or salaries, for that da} r . ” The resolution was carried as representing the view of 'the conference only, and delegates were instructed to submit to their Associations for consideration bcCoro.it is sent ro the R.S.A,
