The colliery proprietors of New South Wales are hopeful that the New Zealand agitation for a duty on Australian coal will not he persevered with, as it will definitely check overseas trade. It is pointed out there is misconception in the Dominion to the effect that local coal is bounty fed by the Commonwealth, at a shilling per ton. The fact is this concession will not apply to coal intended for New Zealand. On the other hand if the duty is imposed there will he an immediate agitation for a retaliatory duty here on New Zealand timber which is said to employ a far greater number of employees than the coal industry.
