The annual inter-Varsity boat race between Cambridge and Oxford took place on the famous Putney-Mor! lake course to-day and alter a r.renuoiis contest Cambridge won by two lengths, the time being Ukviin. iisec. Crowds began to gather in the early morning despite drizzling rain and a coM south-easterly wind. Oxford won the toss and chose the Surrey side. There was a perfect star! at 12. id p.m. Oxford gained a sligh T lead, striking and v'ambrnlge .!<>. The boats drew level at the mile post. The dark bints regained a three-quar-ters of a length lead at Hammersmith Bridge, but Cambridge overtook C m at the three miles, after wh.-h. pn.bag
more steadily than Oxford, tliey increased the lead to three-quarters of a length at Barnes Bridge and gradually added to ‘he advantage. Oxford made a magnificent spurt at the Brewery but whs unable to reduce the leeway and Cambridge finished two lengths ahead of the very distressed dark bine crew. The time was the second best since the war. Cambridge thus have won 41 races to Oxford’s 40, gaining the lead lor the first time since 1802. The race m 18/< was a tie. , To-day’s was a great race rowed between shores black with umbrellas. The rain ceased before the start but came clown again at the M*. Onord rowed verv plnckilv and never lost foim, but Cambridge had the race m harm after passing Barnes Br.dgc Tinne, commenting on the tosi. >. said: “it was a gruelling race and we iust failed to pnl! it off.” ■ Mr Stanley Baldwin, who was a Keen spectator, described it M the most thrillincr raeo soon for years.
