S.T.H.S. BOARD MEETS. CONDITION OF SCHOOL DISCUSSED. At the nioiithly meeting of the Stratford Technical High School management committee, held last night, Mr H. Trimble presided' over the following attendance of members : Mrs J, W. McMillan, Messrs A. Harper, A. Ferguson, O. Moore, N, B. Fletcher, E. H. Eason, G. Dick and S. MacA lister. PRINCIPAL'S REPORT. I The Principal, Mr A. H. R. Aniess repoutecl *s follows for the preceding month: The roll was as follows:'First year commercial 23, second year com* mercial 11, third and fourth year commercial 8, total 42. First year science 2o t third and fourth year science 30, total 94. First year general 40, second year general 23, third and fourth year general 34, total 102. First year trades and engineering IS, second year trades and engineering 15, Total 3ft.. Total attendance, 271,. The attendance, had been somewhat interfered with by the bad weather, and illness on the part of the pupils. The Department had agreed to the expenditure of a sum 1 not more than £6O on interior decorations in the school. The school would close on August 23rd and on, Friday and Saturday of that week the bazaar for the hostel funds was being held. Tn sport the school had been very successful this winter. The first fifteen had won the third gracfe Central Divisional championship audi the ' second fifteen had to play off with Star for the fifth grade championship. The girls, hockey team had yet to play off with Pihama for th° final of the Taranaki ladies' championship. The basket ball B team had suffered only one defeat during the season and still had a chance of winning the B eracte championship. The Principal's report, was received. The Education Department notified that two thirds of the cost of renovating the interior 0 f the school would be authorised by the Department. | The .renovations were estimated at j £6O so the Department were. pre- ! pared to' find £4O of this sum. CONDITION OF SCHOOL. Mr Moore, chairman of the works committee, reported having inspected the school. Some of the rooms were in a disgraceful state, he said, as ! stains, caused by leaks and dampness, showed on many of the walls., Mr S. Maealister said it was a coinparativeljy new building yet there, was always something to' be repaired in it. The Board had been forced ix> expend a sum. on the roof a few years back. He thought there must ho something wrong wiih the construction. They could minimise the defects but iipwould be a. costly job. jMr Maealister concluded by saying, ,it Was a. scandalous matter when the Department allows defective buildings to be erected thus entailing the use of their money and! the use of extra public money to remedy small defects that keep occurring after the school had been built. It was deemed that the matter of repairing the leaks should be left in Mr Moore's hands. THE WORK OF THE SCHOOL. Mr Moore said that at a meeting he had been to one night last week ho had been reproved because he told a man, who wanted an office gi>rl, to apply to Mr Amess for one. He had then explained that the school was for the purpose of preparing hoys and girls for positions in all walks of life. Mr Maealister said that when boys and girls left school to make, a start in life they ha* to face things and take their turn.
