, The greatest rainfall experienced here for a great many years occurred yesterday, 0.10 inches being recorded for the twenty-four hours -to nine o’clock this morning. In two hours from 4 to 0.30 in the afternoon 2.24 inches fell. The street channels were unable to" carry the water which spread across the footpaths and flooded the cellars in places to a dept of three or four feet, causing heavy damage. The rivers are in high flood and there are some washouts on the roads. Motor traffic with Dunedin is blocked. It is still raining, but only n a fitful drizzle.
