mm oy bird CLAIMED FOR U.S.A. MOUNTAIN RANGES DISCOVERED, OUTSIJDE BRITISH. TERRITORY. (By Russell Owen). Received s.is a.m.) BAY OF WHALES, Feb. 19. New territory has been claimed for the United states by Gommiander Bya-d as a, result of his latest flights, particularly those of yesterday. Two new mountain ranges have been discovered.

The Rockefeller range is within the territory claimed by the British and known as Ross Dependency, but the other and larger range of peaks, towelling eight to ton thousand feet is apparently outside the limit of the British area, and is at the border of a new land lying between the Ross Sea and Grahamland. OTHER PEAKS SEEN. Other peaks on the Rockefellers have been seen and everything indicates that Byrd in h's flights next season will be able to chart a land ‘greater in extent than tin; known territory of the Boss Dependency and possibly equally majestic in elm raster. This territory is eastward ol anything that has ever been se.en by another* explorer. Scott, who discovered King Edward Land and was unable to reach the shore beyond. , ! FORTY THOUSAND MILES. EXPLORED. X • Now not only have forty thousand square miles of Antarctic been explored owing to the amazing visibility gained by the aeroplane, but the Rockefeller range has been by an aero camera and a sketch of the entire sector has been made. This great now land which hah" so aroused the enthusiasm of the members of the expedition has been named Maris Byrd land.

Two new peaks have been sighted due east of the Rockefeller range, which incidentally runs north-east aid sdutli-west, beginning at a point fifty miles south of Scott Nunai talcs, and Byrd, who penetrated a long distance south yesterday, xwmetrated what ho believed to bo the bsigb land at almost the exact point where Amundsen on his trip to the Pole (reported the appearance of land.

This was about half way between tbo Bay of Whales and tho Axel Heiberg Glacier.—Copyright by New York Times and St. Louis Post Despatch.
