HAWKE CUP MATCH. - PALMERSTON N., Last Night. Hawk’e Bay commenced a Hawke Cup challenge game against Mariawatu to-day. Play was postponed in the morning owing to rain, but was commenced in the afternoon on a dull wicket. Manawatu batted first and when stumps were drawn had six wickelts down for 129. MATCHES AT/WELLINGTON" AND CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. ( The weather was hot and sultry for the opening of the Phmket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury, yesterday. Auckland won the toss and hatted on a wicket which played true and fast. The outfield was in perfect order. Drizzling rain began to fall about three o’clock, at first very light, hut increasing until at 4.30 it was Gaining heavily.

Alloo, the captain, who went in at a critical stage of the game and whose wicket was the last to fall when he had made 101. L. C. Eastman, the Essex professional, pleased the crowd with his forceful methods and made 8. Blunt made 39 runs in stylish manner. Henderson took four wickets for 127, and Lambent three for 67.
