TEACHING OF OBSTETRICS.

AN UP-TO-DATE HOSPITAL. ’ A report of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society published in the “New Zealand Medical Journal’’ states;— “We understand that the money voted by Parliament will allow tliie authorities to establish a Chair of Obstetrics and perhaps enable a .sec'ond tutor for pratical obstetrical work to be appointed. While we are thankful for these projected improvements, we must remember that? the teaching of obstetrics in the Dominion Medical School will not bij on a first-class footing until an up-to-date obstetrical hospital is established to replace the Itwo small hospitals at present used for teaching purposes. It la an Essential part of modern obstetric training for the students to Hv e in residence for several months. This experience cannot be secured for the New Zealand students till a hospital, estimated tocost £40,000, irrespective of any endowment fund, is presented to Dunedin. In view of the world-wide interest in the reduction of maternal mortality and the widespread public interest manifested in New Zealand of recent years, is It too much to hope that some beneficent citizens will endow this department, and endow iit handsomely, so that it will pass from the indignity of being the weakest spot to the honour of being the brightest sp‘ot in the whole curriculum? Members of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society have it largely in their hands to shape public opinion to this national need, and we rely upon them to use their influence both privately and collectively. Thanks entirely to the generosity of one member, who realises the need of creating obstetrical interest and research, our society is able to announce the award of a £SO scholarship. Arrangements have been made with the Board of the Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, to give the scholarship holder six months’ house surgeon's experience.”
