STRATFORD’ POSSIBILITIES.. LANDING GROUND SUGGESTED. .Mr R. Thompson reported at last night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on the matter of a site for art aerodrome in or near Stratford. iHe said the question, arose as to how much land was required. As aeroplanes were developing it seemed that before long /they Would be able to land in a very small space. There was a piece of ground 550 yards long inking Edward Paik between Portia Street and Brecon Road. At Fiji, Eingsford- limit’J. landed the Southern Cross on a piece cf ground 400 yards long, machine going ,at 65 miles per hour. Truly, the landing caused some trouble, the whole length lot the field being used, but the machine was an extraordinarily larg e on£.

Mr Thomson said the width of the ground in King Edward Park was 100 t'o 150 yards at the Brecon Road end and considerably wider at the town end. If the ground could ha in the town itself it 1 would be a great advantage. H e would move tliat; the secretary be asked to write to the Defence Department and the Postmaster-General asking for full particulars as to the size of ground required for an aerodrome. With this, information in halve the Chamber would be in a better position to make suggestions as to a site. The motion was carried. Members mentioned some other totalities Where sites might perhaps be; secured. Mr H. F. Flem.ng asked if it was advisable to go on w’th the suggestion to form l ah Aero Club. The chairman (Mr J- B. Richards) replied he t'hSought the suggestion was only ‘fluff.” He did not think it was worth while go ng on with a thing which meant nothing. He ■was not against l the club, but what actually would its formation mean>^ Mr Fleming said the only way to accurately choose a suitable site was to get a man to. .fly over the district and make observations.
