ENGLISH CRICKET TOUR

MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIA. VISITORS MAKE 31!) FOR NINE. SYDNEY, Nov. 17. In reply to the Australian Eleven's <irst innings score of 231, England had made 319 for the loss of nine wickets when stumps were drawn. Flay was resumed in perfect weather and on an excellent wicket 1 . Sutcliffe and Hcbbs hatted soundly, off shot's predominating. When 53, Sutcliffe swung one from Scott to deep square leg, but Morgan failed to hold the ball, which passed through his hand to the fence. : Soon afterwards Sutcliffe had another life. He drove Nothiing very hard to cover. Andrews fielded the hall beautifully, but the return went ever Oldiield's head with Sutcliffe out of his ground. Almost immediately afterwairds he was taken, at the wickets. He had hatted 73 minutes, hit 1 four fours and made many crisp strokes, especially to the off. SHOULD HATE GONE OUT. It is admitted by Hobbs and Sut'cliffe that the latter should have been given out when he was two, when an appeal was made for a catch at the wickets. H'obbs, though not very forceful, was not stodgy. He is still showingneatness, especially in strokes through covers. Mead and Tyldesley added 182 for the fourth wicket. Both played steadily, waiting for loose balls. . Frequent changes were made in the bowling, Scott, Hooker, Nothiing, Bettington and Morgan being tried ineffectively, till Mead put his leg before to Hooker. He took two hours to score 58, and played steadily rather than brilliantly, though occasionally he got plenty cf force into his drives off the slow bowlers, Bettington and Andrews. MORE SAFE THAN BRILLIANT.

Tyldesley provided the third victim to leg before. Like his colleagues he was more safe than brilliant; during his 154 minutes at' the wickets. His score included ten fours. With the exception of Tate, who hit lustily, landing one ball into the ladies' reserve, the other were not prominent. T-Tooker and Nothling were ■ the best of the bowlers, each keeping good length. The former turned slightly from the off. Bettlngton improved after a weak start. The fielding was good, and Oldfield's keeping of wickets was brilliant. 'The attendance was 27,000, and the receipt's £2300. AUSTRALIA. First Innings 231 ENGLANJD. First, Innings.
