NOTES AND COMMENTS.
One Stratford child, a few days ago, gave a clear indication that she was not altogether satisfied with her male parent. "Mother," she asked, "why did you, marry daddy?" f 'l don't know dear, why?" asked mother. "Oh, well, he's not quite my style," was the astonishing reply. * * Tliere is no oflicial confirmation of the rumour that Mr Holland will move a vote of no-confidence in the Government because of the All Blacks' defeat in the test match. The Hon. W. Nosworthy says that unemployment in New Zealand is less serious than in Russia. Why dragi Russia in? The people of that country are so busy making it a workers' paradise that they have no time to work.
The more one visits the Stratford Mountain House the more one deplores the apathy of Stratford in regard to such an attractoin. There is nothing in the district to equal it, and everyone who goes there says the same thing, yet no big community effort seems to be organised to help the Committee on. True there is every hope the Government will metal the road, but there is much more besides this to be done. If the East side of Egmont ever comes into its own, it will be one of the most popular show places in the whole of the North Island. * * A cold reception and warm weather were responsible for the failure Of "Who's Who," the play in which the massive Oscar Asche returned to the stage after the failure of .his musical effort, "The Good Old Days." The fates seem, to be conspiring against Oscar during recent years. Ohu Chin Chow netted him a fortune in war time, but it all dribbled away, and his New Zealand and Australian tour, which followed, seemed to consist! of a series of spectacular disputes with his managemnet. Then came his bankruptcy and temporary retirmeent and when he did contrive to re-appear, the play wasnt up to much, while to add to his troubles brought about by the weather, even the roa d in front of the theatre Avas torn up for repairs.
