STRATFORD BOWLING CLUB

THIS ANNUAL MEETING. Mr. E. Leach, president, was iu the chair at last night’s annual meeting of members of the Stratford Howling CiiiLc Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. W. Mr. L. B. Davie s seconded. The president said they had had a good opening day, and this started the season well- The now members enrolled had not quite filled the fjips left by members who had left the town. The visits during the year from different clubs were very enjoyable, and they were more m morons than usual, including visits from Rite a and Opunake. As the year progressed there were extra expenses, so that the club were a little behind i with finance. Repairs were heavier this year than usual. Summer time, in conjunction with the dry weather, .Dive members easily twice as much play as usual. There had not been Bo many competitions as in previous years, but those hold were very good. The winners were jolly 'good sports and were to be congratulated. Mr Lyons represented the club in the divisional championship, which he won, but in the other part of -the competition he was not so lucky. MrMcLaren, the winner, deserved his win, and it would have been a good man who could have beaten him. They had had a remarkably good green, considering the large amount -of id ay. Members’ thanks were duo in Mr. Amess, the green warden and 10 one or two members who had helped him,. Thanks were due to the press for the excellent reports given of matches, and to the ladies, for help with entertainment. The committee deserved thanks for the manner in which they hid stuck to their work. They had clone everything possible for the club, and he did not think a better committee could be found. Mr A. H. R. Amess congratulated the president and committee on the good work of the season. Extensive repairs were required to the pavilion, but though; the balance-sheet was down a bib, the property was never in a better condition. Some new assets bad been added, including ,xn electric heater. It was due to the guarantors to make an endeavour each year to reduce the amount owing to them. Something might bo done if the refreshment department ■ was placed in the hands of some I keen member.

Mr S- 0. Dunbar, as one of the rank and file, said he desired to cm prc-s appreciation of .the president, committee and green virrden. Members had had a splendid season cf bowling. The president said there were many men in Stratford who were not members of either howling club, and with a little activity on the part of members it should he po.sible to substantially increase the membershipHe would like each member to bear his words, in mind, and when he returned from the Old. Country he would be glad l to see that something had been done. Perhaps they might not do quite a s much as he suggested, hut if he found twenty new members on bis return he would’be- satisfied. Several new members were elected.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Mr Leach proposed Mr L. B. Davis as president. He said Mr Davis had done a great deal of work for the club, and was one. who was not afraid to put his shoulder to the wheel. Mr G. Smart secondedMr F. Dixon was elected vice-presi-dent. Mr 'D. Carman intimated tlilxt he desired to be relieved of duty as secretary.,, Messrs P. Skoglund and J. S. Lyons paid tributes to the work of Mr Carman. Mr G. H. W. Ewing was elected secretary and treasurer. Mr Amess proposed Mr H. Sanderson as green warden. The green waiden’s job was a hard one, Imd he appealed to all members to extend’ as much help as possible to the green warden. Mr Smart seconded, and Mr Sanderson was duly elected. Mr J. G. Allen was elected auditor. The ch/iinnan said that in the past season there had been only one selector and it was quite satisfactory. Mr Howatt moved that there he two selectors—one old hand and one young player. The motion was defeated, and one selector was decided on. Mr A. E. Howell was elected scloc-

Mr A mess moved that the committee go into the matter of selling the spare section. There wa<j a proposal to use it for a croquet green, hut the town was well served in that respect, and it might be difficult to start another croquet club. The proceeds of the sale would make a welcome reduction of the overdrUftMr Allen seconded. Ho said 1 older members would remember that the section was bought because theie vas a proposal to erect on the land a building which members thought would bo objectionable. The motion was carried. FINANCE. Messrs Davis, Allen, Amoss, Howell and Skoglund were appointed a committee to go iota the matter of members taking up debentures to wipe out the overdraft, and to report to the September meeting of the committee. CENTRE DELEGATES.

Mr Lyons suggested tlii.it the delegates to the Centre should bo given a direction on certain points—■ Summer Time for instance.

Mr Skoglund said it had teen thought that Summer Time wouiu make for longer play, but the opposite had been the case.

Mr Alien said that in some clubs under Summer Time, the system had grown up of providing light refreshments at the pavilion, obviating the necessity of members Ictiving befoie sunset to have their evening meal at homo.

It was decided to ask the delegates to vote in favour of Summer Time.

Mr Amess asked for an expression of opinion on- the method of finding the champion of champions instituted last season.

Mr Lyons said the new system was rather less of a strain than the old system. time limit.

It wiis decided to recommend to the committee that all club competitions he played with a time limit for each game. Mr Lyons suggested that a limit of a fortnight could be fixed. It would increase interest, and if a member could not make it convenient to play his game on one day within a fortnight he should forfeit his game. THANKS. On Mr Skoglund's motion a special vote of til inks was passed to the outgoing officers. Mr Skoglund said he thoroughly appreciated, the efforts of the committee to give pleasure to those who could not spare the time to take P art ‘ in the management'of the club.
