A NEW RAILWAY
ROTORUA TO TAIfPO. » CONSTRUCTION AUTHORISED. [ t WORK WILL COMMENCE AT ONCE. i " Press Association—Copyright WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government has decided to extend the railway line from Rotorua to Taupo. The Prime Minister states that he was guided in the decision by the necessity of opening up further areas of Crown land by the experience gained with fertilisers on land of se.:ocd and third" class nature, and by results of research work. A further consideration is that in about five years the Fores'ry Department will require transportation for their timber. Two commissions have reported in favour of the railway, but ;the question of a road was also co»sid- , ered, and again the balance was in ; favor 'of the railway. The work will be put in hand at once, and a number of men transferred from the East Coast line.
