FATE OF STALE A.

SUSPENSE CONTINUES.

UNCONFIRMED MESSAGES

United Pres# Assn.—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. (Received 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, May 27.

The suspense concerning tlio fate of the Italia with & crew of eighteen and a dog aboard, continues. The last fully authenticated wireless from the airship was timed at seven, o’clock on Friday evening, hut early this morning, two round-about messages reached Loudon., find are transmitted reservedly. One is from Berlin, and says the Oslo Meteroligical Institute intercepted a mutilated message from Nobile saying lie had landed and chlling for help. The message does not give the position, and it is! rather strange tin's wn s not received direct from Oslo whence plenty of messages arrived earlier. The second message from Vadso reported that the Italia- sent a wireless’ for supply a ship at 10.5 on Siturday night. This is also unconfirmed by Oslo. I

Obviously, if one of the Italia’s motors ceased, General Nobile would be unable to make King’s Bay. through the storm. It is feared the ship must now he being blown helplessly towards Siberia. It ig recalled that when the Italia returned from her previous voyhge in the direction of Franz, Josef Land she had : >n ice coating weighing nearly a ton, therefore the possibility of her being forced down cannot be ignored. An ice covered

aerial would account for the cessation of messages. The Government bias ordered the steamer Hobby, at present at Tromso, to proceed to Franz Josef Land. It is pointed out that if Nobile manages, tio make a safe landing on firm ice or in Siberia, it,may be several months before news is received.

The party’s only course would he to (abandon the airship and journey afoot until it established contact with civilisation.

The Italians are ill prepared to prolongedly endure a rigorous Arctic life. Vadso wireles® stations have been trying all day vainly to got in touch with the Italia. —Australian P.A.

UNFOUNDED REPORT

(Received 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 27

Both King’s Bay and Oslo report no further news of the Italia. A report from Berlin that the Italia had landed and wirelessed for help is apparently unfounded. —Australian Press
