BATHING FACILITIES.

At the last meeting of the Borough Council it was decided that a report should 'he obtained regarding the cost of certain minor improvements to a swimming pool at the rear of the Stratford Bowling Green. Reference was made to this at the School ICommittee meeting on Friday night and as a result, an objection will 'he forwarded to the Council against the expenditure of Borough funds in this direction. The point of view of the Committee can be understood, as that body provides baths which are open to the public, and which although perhaps not so up-to-date as those in larger towns, are nevertheless well kept and splendidly conducted. Tile Committee is at some expense in connection with those baths, and naturally desires to draw as much revenue as possible from them. At (he same time it must be remembered that they are not Municipal Baths, and there cannot be much room for complaint, should the civic authorities decide to spend a little money in making the pool referred to above a little more attractive. Some expense has been undertaken in connection with another river pool in King Edward

Park, Lhc result being- that an excellent swimming place hag been made for these who desire to disport .themselves in the river, and though more could be done the extensive use that is being made of this pool completely justifies the outlay. Many people who live in the other direction use the pool at the rear of the Bowling Green, and what has been done there. alrea.dy has been done by the residents themselves. Therefore the Council would not find it difficult to justify itself should it spend a little money in further improvements. In Napier, where the baths are owned by the Municipality, facilities are provided for river bathing and this is true of several other towns. It must be remembered that anything which is going to make the town more attractive is a worthy undertaking. " Those who desire to go to the river would probably go there in any case, and the provision, of some little conveniences for them would not affect the attendance at the baths, which are being well patronised also.
