MONTHLY MEETING. The montlilv meeting on Monday evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan 1 ), Ct.s W . A. Hewitt, S. Ward, C. R. Einnerty, Mr p Thomson, Or s W. Coombndge, A. Emplovment of extra man.— -I hat applications be called for this position at a wage of £3 per wek. Cr Ward moved an amendment, to Clause 3 to the effect that a youth should be employed at 35s per week, with, perhaps, an advance of 10s per week in a few months. Such an employee would be more satisfactory to the caretaker and also to the Board. 1 Seconded by Cr Lamason. 0r Coombrklge. said a married man. should he employed at an advance of 10s or 20s a week. He had in nnnd) one who would be glad of the employment. Cr Nelson supported (. r Coombridge'.s remarks. , Cr Lawson spoke against the amendment, and favoured the employment of. a manned man. The Mavor said in. the interests ot the ratepayers probably it would be best, but at this time of the year the married men, should be considered. He understood that the married man whom- the committee had in mind would be receiving a fair wage if he had £3 per week. Of course, if ■•■)'- plications were called a bettor workman might be obtained. The msiis at. present employed was a married man, and the caretaker considered he was very satisfactory. Cr Hewitt said the Board should be careful about the continual rising of wages. JThere would be plenty of applicants at £3 a week. Some of tfr<ratepayers thought, the wages were getting too high, and there was. a disposition for the wages, to fall. The amendment was lost. Cr Lawson moved that be employed at £3 a. week- He was a bandsman, and it would be advisable to emplov him, as it was becoming difficult again, as had always been the cAse, to keep the Baud together. Cr COOlll bridge second? Cr Ward opposed, and said the principle of pitch-forking anyone into the position was wrong. Public applications should be called and the wagje | should be £3 10s. Th'3 Board should not ba slave-drivers. FOREMAN'S REPORT. Till? Borough Foreman reported as follow; 011 the month's work. Trees in Kenton, Miranda, Page, Portia, and Hamlet Streets have bisn cleared, of grass and attnded to. Two drakes were sent v to the Owaiawa Domain Board; there arc three young drakes were sent to the Okaiawa Dihe sold. We have had inquiries For them, and priced them at 6s -each. We have secured a lorry load of native trees including four large nikau palms and a large quantity of small ones, all having been planted in King Ellward Park. Six black pun gas were planted from the second bridge and along the north bank of the Patea. The small Totara and Rimu trees) in. the northern part of the Park have been attended to, bracken cut back, blackberry grubbed, and branches of trees cut to allow growth- of young trees, and all overhanging growth cut back from the paths in this part oH the Park. Two palms from the railway plot have been planted at the entrance of Kino; Edward Park. Both railway plots have been dug and the. north plot planted with bulbs. Twelve beech trees have been planted along Fenton Street west, six on each side of the road. The following have kindly donated flowers and shrubs: Mrs Milne (Brooks Road), Mrs R, Masters, Mrs A. W. Budge, Mrs T. Lawson, Mra Corkill. The largest of the trees have been planted in Victoria Park and the plants heeled in the nursery. The underscrab has been cut and cleared out of portion of King Edward Park on the south bank of the river' near the swing bridge, and this portion is being planted with NVitive tree*. J suggest that the Board inspor-1 ihr.-J work. Forty cubic yards oi black soil has been carted from. Koineo Street to the entrance of King Edward Park. An owner is wanted, for an overcoat and hockey stick left on the hockey grounds. The hockey ground has been mowed and marked out. A vote of thanks was passed to- tTr.' donors of trees and shrubs.
