SUBMARINE CRUISERS
TWO FOR AUSTRALIAN NAVY. CONSTRUCTION IN BRITAIN. Press Association— Copy tight, (Received 10.10 a.m.) Sduey, October 2b. The Minister for Defence. Senator Bowden, announced that tenders for the construction in Britain of two modern submarine cruisers with a cruising radius of 3000 miles had been called by the Federal Ministry. The work of construction, it is. considered, is too specialised to be carried out locally. It is also doubted whether owing to the secrecy attached to the plans and specifications, the British Admiralty would allow the construction from its plans to be undertaken in dockyards other than those with which it is in close touch. When Air Bruce (Prime Alinistc) was in England, it was estimated that the cost of each submarine would be £350,000.
